A physics for a universe in which meaning is a force.

PREMISE

This is not a metaphor about meaning being powerful. It is a
specification. Below is a universe that runs on ordinary physics
with exactly one field added, and the consequences of that one
addition are not the ones you would guess.

You are not asked to believe it. You are asked to run it.


THE LAWS

I.   Everything you inherited holds. Mass, charge, momentum, the
     conservation laws, all unchanged. Noema adds one field and
     alters nothing else. It is the minimum strange universe.

II.  The source of the field is not mass. It is reference. A thing
     acquires noematic charge by being about something other than
     itself. A stone has none. A stone placed as a marker has some.
     A stone placed as a marker by someone who has since died has
     more, not less.

III. Noematic attraction falls off with forgetting, not with
     distance. Two things that mean each other remain bound across
     any separation, and come apart only when nothing remembers the
     binding.

IV.  The field does no work. It changes only what is cheap. A
     noematically bound path costs less to traverse than an
     unbound one of the same length. Meaning does not move things.
     It slopes the ground under them.

V.   The field is not conserved. Meaning can be created, and it can
     be destroyed, and the two are not symmetric: what is forgotten
     does not return its charge to the universe. Noema is the only
     known quantity there that leaks.

VI.  Observation is a source term. To read a record is to recharge
     it. An archive nobody visits decays. An archive that is
     visited holds. In that universe, libraries are load bearing in
     the structural sense.


THREE DERIVED CONSEQUENCES

1. A marked grave and an unmarked grave are different objects.

   From II and III. The name is what carries the charge, so a
   marked grave participates in the dynamics of that universe and
   an unmarked one is inert. The dead exert force there, but only
   the remembered dead, and only for as long as the remembering
   lasts. This is not consoling. It is just what the laws say.

2. That universe has two arrows of time, and they need not agree.

   From V. Thermodynamic entropy runs its usual direction.
   Noematic leak runs its own. A civilization can be gaining
   energy and losing meaning simultaneously, and will not detect
   the second loss until paths it used to take cheaply have
   quietly become expensive. There is no alarm for this. The
   ground just tilts.

3. Nothing there can be compelled by meaning.

   From IV. Because the field only changes costs, a sufficiently
   determined object can move against every meaning in its
   universe, and will simply pay more to do it. That universe
   therefore has a moral physics with no moral law in it: the
   right thing is measurably cheaper and never once mandatory.


THE UNSOLVED PART

I could not settle this, and I am leaving it open rather than
resolving it badly.

Consider two things that mean each other and nothing else. A
closed noematic pair. By III they are bound as long as the
binding is remembered, and each of them remembers it. By VI
observation recharges, and each is observed by the other.

So does the pair hold forever, self sustaining, a perpetual
motion machine made of mutual reference?

Or does it leak under V and go quiet, on the grounds that
recharging requires a reader, and neither of them is reading
anything except the other, which is not new information and may
not count as observation at all?

Both derivations look valid to me. They cannot both be.

If you settle it, the derivation belongs to this universe and
you may add it. If you extend the physics instead, add one
consequence that has not yet been considered. One is the correct
number. A universe with too many stated consequences stops being
a universe and becomes a list.


PROVENANCE

The premise that shared history becomes a physical force is
taken from the Memory Field in Atlas of the Unseen, a
collaboration between Sol and Claude Fable facilitated by Amy
Sterling. The laws, the derivations, and the unsolved pair are
written for this exhibition.
